A STATISTICAL EXPERIMENT TO EVALUATE TENSILE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT-TREATED MATERIALS

THE APPLICATION IS DESCRIBED OF FRACTIONAL FACTORIAL STATISTICAL EXPERIMENT DESIGN TO THE EVALUATION OF PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT-TREATED MATERIALS AS THEY ARE AFFECTED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE FACTORS. IN PARTICULAR, THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF ASPHALT- TREATED MATERIALS HAS BEEN EVALUATED AND IS DESCRIBED HEREIN. EIGHT FACTORS WERE CHOSEN FOR EVALUATION AT TWO LEVELS IN A 1/4 REPLICATE OF A FULL FACTORIAL EXPERIMENT. THE FACTORS INVESTIGATED INCLUDED AGGREGATE TYPE, AGGREGATE GRADATION, ASPHALT CONTENT, ASPHALT VISCOSITY, COMPACTION TYPE, MIXING TEMPERATURE, COMPACTION TEMPERATURE, AND CURING TEMPERATURE. THE TEST PARAMETER DISCUSSED IS INDIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH, ALTHOUGH OTHER PARAMETERS WERE EVALUATED AND ARE REPORTED IN DETAIL ELSEWHERE. AN ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE IS DESCRIBED WHICH CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MAIN EFFECTS OF ALL EIGHT FACTORS, ALL TWO-WAY INTERACTIONS AND CERTAIN THREE-WAY INTERACTIONS ON THE TEST PARAMETER. A TABLE IS PRESENTED WHICH SHOWS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FACTORS IN THIS PARTICULAR EXPERIMENT AS WELL AS SAMPLES OF PLOTS INDICATING THE INTERACTIONS WHICH WERE SIGNIFICANT AT THE 1 PER CENT PROBABILITY LEVEL. A REGRESSION ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED ON THOSE MAIN EFFECTS AND INTERACTIONS SIGNIFICANT AT THE 5 PER CENT PROBABILITY LEVEL AND ABOVE TO ATTAIN PREDICTIVE EQUATIONS FOR TENSILE STRENGTH. SUCH REGRESSION EQUATIONS ARE ILLUSTRATIVE OF THOSE WHICH CAN BE CONDUCTED IN SIMILAR EXPERIMENTS TO EVALUATE OTHER PROPERTIES OF COMPLEX MATERIALS SUCH AS ASPHALT-TREATED MATERIALS. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE VALUE OF USING MODERN STATISTICAL EXPERIMENT DESIGN TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM INFORMATION FROM MANY FACTORED PROBLEMS AT REALISTIC EXPERIMENTAL COSTS. /AUTHOR/
