THE DYNAMIC MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN

THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ASPHALT ROAD SURFACING DEPENDS ON THE CONDITIONS OF USAGE OF THE ROAD, THE NATURE AND GRADATION OF THE STONE MIXTURE USED AND ON THE INTRINSIC PROPERTIES OF THE BITUMEN. IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLE INTEREST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BETTER MEANS OF SPECIFYING THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ROAD BITUMENS. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES HOW THE PROPERTIES OF ALL BITUMENS MAY BE REDUCED TO TWO MASTER CURVES -- ONE EXPRESSING THE DEPENDENCE OF COMPLEX SHEAR MODULUS ON FREQUENCY AND ONE THE DEPENDENCE OF COMPLEX SHEAR MODULUS ON TEMPERATURE. IT IS SHOWN HOW THE PROPERTIES OF ANY BITUMEN MAY BE OBTAINED FROM THESE CURVES WITH THE USE OF THREE PARAMETERS REPRESENTING CONSISTENCY, "SHEAR SUSCEPTIBILITY" AND "TEMPERATURE SUSCEPTIBILITY." IT IS HOPED THAT THIS WORK WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUTURE SPECIFICATIONS BASED ON WELL DEFINED RHEOLOGICAL PARAMETERS. /AUTHOR/
