CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RHEOLOGY OF BITUMENS

AN INVESTIGATION IS DESCRIBED OF THE LINEAR VISCOELASTIC PROPERTIES OF A SERIES OF BITUMENS, RANGING FROM EXTREME SOL TO EXTREME GEL TYPE AT VARIOUS FREQUENCIES AND TEMPERATURES. THE DILATOMETRIC GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURES WERE ALSO DETERMINED. THE RESULTS WERE ANALYZED IN TERMS OF DYNAMIC MODULUS AND PHASE ANGLE CURVES AT CONSTANT TEMPERATURE AND ALSO BY VISCOSITY-TEMPERATURE RELATIONS. MODULUS AND PHASE ANGLE AS A FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY COULD BE DESCRIBED BY FORMULAE IN WHICH A PARAMETER, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE BITUMEN TYPE, DEFINED THE CHARACTER OF THE FUNCTIONS. VISCOSITY WAS THE ONLY ADDITIONAL PARAMETER REQUIRED TO DESCRIBE THE MODULUS AND PHASE ANGLE AS A FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY. THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON VISCOSITY PARTIALLY CONFORMED TO THE "WILLIAMS LANDEL AND FERRY EQUATIONS," FOR WHICH THE CHARACTERISTIC CONSTANTS WERE FOUND TO DEPEND ON THE TYPE OF BITUMEN. THE TWO BASIC FUNCTIONS: MODULUS AS A FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY AND VISCOSITY VERSUS TEMPERATURE WERE RECOMBINED IN A WAY WHICH MAKES THE THERMORHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES EASILY ACCESSIBLE. SOME EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN TO ILLUSTRATE HOW THIS REPRESENTATION CAN BE UTILIZED. THE RELATION BETWEN THE NEWLY OBTAINED VISCOELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND CONVENTIONAL BITUMEN TEST RESULTS IS DISCUSSED. THE DILATOMETRIC GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURES WERE FOUND TO PROVIDE LITTLE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN. /AUTHOR/
