COMPATIBILITY OF PRIMER AND ROAD GRAVEL IN BITUMINOUS SEALING WORK
A LABORATORY STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF THE PRINCIPAL FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMPATIBILITY OF TWO PRIMERS OF DIFFERENT CHEMICAL TYPE USED IN LIGHT PRIMERSEAL WORK, NAMELY, PETROLEUM TAR AND CUTBACK BITUMEN, GRADE 1.4 (1.E. ) TO 2 STOKES AT 50C), WITH SELECTED NATURAL ROAD GRAVELS. THE INFLUENCE OF TYPE OF PRIMER, THE STATE OF COMPACTION OF THE ROAD GRAVEL AND ITS MOISTURE CONDITION DURING AND AFTER SPRAYING HAVE BEEN EXAMINED AND THE FILM FORMING BEHAVIOR OF THE PRIMERS IS DESCRIBED. INCOMPATIBILITY IS DEFINED AS THE EXCESSIVE PENETRATION/SEGREGATION OF THE PRIMER RESULTING IN A PRIMER FILM WHICH MAY BE OF NEGLIGIBLE THICKNESS, SOMETIMES BRITTLE PITCH LIKE IN APPEARANCE, AND/OR WITH A POORLY CEMENTED SURFACE. THE DEFINITION OF A SATISFACTORY PRIMER FOR LIGHT PRIMERSEAL WORK IS OFFERED AND A SIMPLE LABORATORY TEST METHOD TO ASSESS THE COMPATIBILITY OF A ROAD GRAVEL AND PRIMER IS DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
