A STUDY OF SOME ROAD BITUMENS USING GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY

USING THE TECHNIQUE OF GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY IT IS POSSIBLE TO FRACTIONATE MIXTURES OF HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT COMPOUNDS SUCH AS BITUMEN ACCORDING TO MOLECULAR SIZE, WITH DIFFERENCES IN CHEMICAL SPECIES EXERTING LITTLE OR NO INFLUENCE ON THE SEPARATION. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE TECHNIQUE, AND DISCUSSES SOME OF ITS POTENTIALITIES, WHEN USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, FOR EVALUATING THE PROCESSES OCCURRING IN BITUMINS DURING MANUFACTURE, APPLICATION AND SERVICE. RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR A NUMBER OF BITUMINS OF DIFFERENT CONSISTENCIES AND ORIGINS. /AUTHOR/
