THE DETERIORATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BITUMEN SEALS IN SERVICE
THE RESULTS OF AN INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANISM OF THE DETERIORATION OF SINGLE INITIAL SEALS ARE PRESENTED. A NUMBER OF SEAL SITES COVERING A WIDE RANGE OF SEAL AGE AND ENVIRONMENTS IN THE SOUTHWEST REGION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA WERE SELECTED FOR THE STUDY. FIELD TESTS INCLUDED MEASUREMENTS OF SURFACE TEXTURE AND SKID RESISTANCE. OBSERVATIONS WERE ALSO MADE OF THE LOSS OF SURFACE AGGREGATE, AND THE TYPE OF CRACKING IN THE SEALED SURFACE. LABORATORY TESTS ON SEAL SAMPLES INCLUDED DETERMINATION OF THE QUANTITIES OF COVER AGGREGATE, AND THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND INFRARED ABSORPTION SPECTRA OF THE SEAL BITUMENS. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT HARDENING OF THE BITUMEN BY OXIDATION IS THE CHIEF FACTOR LIMITING THE LIFE OF THESE SEALS. THE POSSIBILITY OF SUBSIDIARY FAILURE BY THE POLISHING OF SOME SURFACE AGGREGATES WAS ALSO INDICATED. TWO POSSIBLE METHODS FOR MINIMIZING BITUMEN HARDENING DURING SERVICE AND PROLONGING SEAL LIFE ARE (1) REJUVENATION OF THE BITUMEN WHICH REPLASTICIZE THE BITUMEN, AND (2) MATERIALS WHICH REPLASTICIZE THE BITUMEN, AND (2) TREATMENTS OF THE BITUMEN BEFORE USE TO IMPROVE ITS RESISTANCE TO HARDENING AND OXIDATION. /AUTHOR/
