EFFECT OF MIX TEMPERATURE

COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES WERE STUDIED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE STUDY OF COMPACTION TEMPERATURES COULD BE CONDUCTED AT A HIGHER DEGREE OF CORRELATION WHEN COMPACTED IN A LABORATORY BY THE MARSHALL METHOD THAN BY CORES FROM ACTUAL PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION. THE FOLLOWING RELATIONSHIPS ARE SHOWN TO COMPACTION TEMPERATURE: (1) SPECIFIC GRAVITY, (2) PERCENT VOIDS, (3) MARSHALL STABILITY AND (4) HVEEM STABILOMETER VALUES. ALL TESTS INDICATE THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPACTION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. VARIOUS COMPACTION EQUIPMENT IS DESCRIBED. IT IS BELIEVED THAT A MUCH MORE PRACTICAL LIMITATION ON THE CONSTRUCTION SEASON IN NORTHERN CLIMATES WOULD BE TO SPECIFY ROLLING TEMPERATURES TOGETHER WITH SEASONAL LIMITATIONS, THAN BY MERELY LIMITING THE PAVING SEASON TO CALENDAR DATES.
