HIGH SPEED SLOPE VARIANCE-ROAD METER

THE MEASUREMENT OF SLOPE VARIANCE BY THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER WAS CORRELATED WITH THE MEASUREMENT MADE BY THE PCA ROAD METER. SECTIONS OF BOTH ASPHALTIC AND PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE SURFACES WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF ROUGHNESS CHARACTERISTICS WERE SELECTED TO RUN REPLICATE TESTS OF BOTH THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER AND THE PCA ROAD METER TO DETERMINE THE REPEATABILITY AS WELL AS THE RELATIONSHIP. EQUATIONS WERE DEVELOPED TO COMPUTE SLOPE VARIANCE AND PRESENT SERVICIBILITY INDEX FROM ROAD METER MEASUREMENTS. THE MEASUREMENT OF SLOPE VARIANCE BY THE ROAD METER IS DEPENDENT UPON TWO MAJOR FACTORS: PAVEMENT SURFACE TYPE AND TEST VEHICLE. THE PCA ROAD METER WAS FOUND TO BE A VALUABLE TOOL FOR RAPID DETERMINATION OF SLOPE VARIANCE. THE AMOUNT OF VARIATION IN RELPICATE DETERMINATIONS OF SLOPE VARIANCE WITH THE ROAD METER IS ABOUT THREE TIMES AS LARGE AS WITH THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER. LOGARITHMIC TRANSFORMATION OF SLOPE VARIANCE WHICH IS MADE IN CALCULATING PAVEMENT SERVICEBILITY INDEX TENDS TO REDUCE THE EFFECT OF THE VARIATION IN SLOPE VARIANCE.
