SURFACE DRESSING WITH TAR-BITUMEN MIXTURES

TAR-BITUMEN MIXTURES STRESS STABILITY WAS INVESTIGATED AND BEHAVIOR COMPARED UNDER CONDITIONS OF VARIOUS LABORATORY TESTS USING THE INDIVIDUAL BINDERS AS CONTROLS. MIXTURES WERE PREPARED BY BLENDING ROAD TAR AT AN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE WITH THE BITUMEN FLEXED WITH A COAL TAR OIL. ASSESSMENT WAS MADE OF: (1) STABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY, (2) RESISTANCE TO STRIPPING WITH WATER, (3) ADHESION TO STONE, AND (4) BRITTLE POINT. AS A RESULT OF THIS WORK, GRIPTA, A BLENDED BINDER WHICH GAVE THE BEST PERFORMANCE IN THESE TRIALS, IS NOW MARKETED. EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THE SPRAYING TEMPERATURE OF THIS BLENDED BINDER SHOULD BE OF THE ORDER OF 280 F. AND, COMPARED WITH TAR, HAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER VISCOSITY AND A LIGHTER RATE OF SPREAD MAY BE USED. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ITS USE ARE AVAILABLE AND SURFACE DRESSING WITH THIS BINDER IN A NUMBER OF COUNTIES HAS BEEN SATISFACTORY.
