HARDENING OF ASPHALT DURING PRODUCTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXES

CHANGE IN ASPHALT DURING MIXING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES IS CONSIDERED IMPORTANT NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT SHORTENS ASPHALT LIFE GREATLY DURING THE RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD IN THE MIXER AND DICTATES WHAT SHALL BE IN THE FINISHED PAVEMENT, BUT ALSO BECAUSE IT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE RELATIVE DURABILITY OF THE ASPHALT. BOTH PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHEMICAL CHANGES IN ASPHALT THAT OCCURRED DURING MIXING WERE STUDIED. PENETRATION AND VISCOSITY CHANGES WERE USED AS INDEXES FOR HARDENING, AND ASPHALTENE AND OXYGEN CONTENTS WERE DETERMINED TO ASCERTAIN THE COLLOIDAL-CHEMICAL CHANGES. RESULTS WERE CORRELATED TO THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS THIN-FILM OVEN TEST, AND ITS VALUE AND POTENTIALITY IN THE ASPHALT DURABILITY TEST ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
