RHEOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF AGING

THE DURABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF ASPHALTS AND ASPHALTIC MIXTURES ARE STUDIED TO ATTEMPT TO FIND A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FUNDAMENTAL AGING MECHANISMS IN THE BITUMINOUS BINDER AND THE CORRESPONDING RHEOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF THE BITUMINOUS-AGGREGATE SYSTEM. THE RHEOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES PREPARED WITH TWO DIFFERENT ASPHALT CEMENTS AND TESTED AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND AGING CONDITIONS WERE STUDIED. THE AGING CONDITIONS CONSISTED OF TWO METHODS: AGING THE ASPHALT BINDER ALONE, AND AGING THE SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURE. AGING WAS FOUND TO AFFECT THE CREEP RESPONSE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. THE GREATER THE DEGREE OF AGING, THE GREATER THE EFFECT ON THE CREEP RESPONSES. THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DEGREE OF AGING AND THE DEFORMATION OF THE SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES. THERE IS ALSO AN APPARENT CORRELATION BETWEEN THE AGING SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ASPHALT CEMENTS AND THE AGING SUSCEPTIBILITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. THE RHEOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF AGED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES APPEARS TO DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY FROM THE RESPONSE OF MIXTURES PREPARED WITH AGED ASPHALTIC BINDERS AT IDENTICAL AGING CONDITIONS. THE TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE FUNCTION OF SAND-ASPHALT MIXTURES IS AFFECTED BY THE AGING CONDITIONS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT FOR THESE ASPHALTIC MIXTURES AND THESE AGING CONDITIONS, THE MASTER CREEP CURVES CAN BE A VALUABLE TOOL IN INTERPRETING THE EFFECTS OF AGING ON THE CREEP RESPONSE OF THE MIXTURES.
