TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS IN BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS AT A SITE NEAR SYDNEY DURING A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR

THE TEMPERATURES AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS IN A 2 IN. AND A 4 IN. DEEP BITUMINOUS CONCRETE SURFACING AND IN THE BITUMEN OF A SURFACE SEAL HAVE BEEN RECORDED OVER A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR AT A TEST SITE NEAR SYDNEY. THE RECORDED DATA WERE ANALYZED FOR: (1) ANNUAL VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE INCLUDING MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND MAXIMUM CHANGE OF TEMPERATURE WITH DEPTH, (2) SEASONAL VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE, AND (3) DAILY VARIATION OF TEMPERATURE. FOR SOME CASES, RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED AT A MELBOURNE TEST SITE. THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE DATA IN RELATION TO THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF DENSE HOT MIX, AND FOR THE SPECIFICATION OF PAVING BITUMEN PROPERTIES FOR THE AREA, ARE DISCUSSED. /A/RRL/
