THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE KIND OF STRIPPING CALLED "PHENOMENE DE SOUPE" /IN FRENCH/

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN HOT-COATED MATERIAL MIXING TECHNIQUES (USE OF HARD BITUMEN, HIGH MIXING TEMPERATURE, AND INCREASE IN THE OUTPUT OF MIXING PLANTS) HAVE RESULTED IN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF STRIPPING PHENOMENA CALLED "PHENOMENES DE SOUPE." THESE PHENOMENA ARE CONNECTED TO THE PRESENCE OF A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF RESIDUAL WATER IN THE AGGREGATES AT THE TIME OF MIXING. THIS WATER EVAPORATES IN THE AGGREGATES CAUSING THE FOLLOWING DISORDERS: ABNORMAL FLUIDITY, SEGREGATION OF BINDER AND AGGREGATES AND ABNORMALLY LOW ADHESION BETWEEN BITUMEN AND AGGREGATES. AN INTERPRETATION OF THESE PHENOMENA IS PROPOSED WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS THE ROLE PLAYED BY THE NATURE OF BITUMEN, MIXING TEMPERATURES, DRYING CHARACTERISTICS, PRESENCE OF WATER IN THE AGGREGATES, AND MINERALOGICAL NATURE OF THE MATERIALS. REMEDIAL METHODS ARE OUTLINED: COVERING OF STORED AGGREGATES, IMPROVEMENT IN DRYING, LOWER MIXING TEMPERATURE, CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT TYPE OF BITUMEN, USE OF SILICONE ADMIXTURE AND THERMOSTABLE DIP, AND ADDITION OF QUICK LIME. THE LATTER SEEMS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE. /LCPC(A)/RRL/
