EXPERIENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS, TAKING ACCOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE GAINED AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY, ENGLAND /IN GERMAN/

REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE INCREASING USE OF GUSSASPHALT IN MAIN ROADS AND STREETS IN GERMANY BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH DURABILITY, AND TO THE POSSIBLE FUTURE USE OF HIGH-DENSITY BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS ON ROADS CARRYING LIGHT TO AVERAGE TRAFFIC. THE PRINCIPLES APPLIED IN ENGLAND TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS (ROLLED ASPHALT SURFACINGS) ARE DISCUSSED, AND MENTION MADE OF RELEVANT RECOMMENDATIONS DRAWN UP IN THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE CONSTITUENTS AND CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES OF THE ROLLED ASPHALT, AND ALSO OF THE PERFORMANCE OF ROLLED ASPHALT WHEN SUBJECTED TO STRESS BY STUDDED TIRES. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE STANDARD SPECIFICATION ON ROLLED ASPHALT. /FG/RRL/
