IMPROVED SPECIFICATIONS FOR AGGREGATES USED IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS /IN RUSSIAN/

THE RECOMMENDATIONS TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DURABILITY OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE CONTAINING AGGREGATES OBTAINED FROM VARIOUS TYPES OF ROCK. THE PROPOSED SPECIFICATIONS VARY ACCORDING TO HIGHWAY TYPE, CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, PAVEMENT LAYERS AND CHIPPINGS CONTENT; THEY TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE POSSIBILITY OF LARGE-SCALE USE OF MODERN METHODS OF AGGREGATE TREATMENT, THUS MAKING POSSIBLE THE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS WITHOUT LOWERING THE QUALITY OF THE PAVEMENT. THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY A WEAR INDEX AND CRUSHING STRENGTH. FOR MAIN ROADS, THE USE OF HIGH-STRENGTH AGGREGATES IS RECOMMENDED. FOR OTHER ROADS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE CONTAINING UP TO 35 PERCENT OF STONE CHIPPINGS WITH A STRENGTH EQUAL TO 600. FOR ROUGH SURFACINGS, HARD VOLCANIC SEDIMENTARY (SANDSTONE AND QUARTZ) AND METAMORPHIC (QUARTZITE) ROCKS, WHICH HAVE A HIGH RESISTANCE TO POLISHING, SHOULD BE UTILIZED. THE FROST RESISTANCE OF AGGREGATES IS STANDARDIZED ACCORDING TO CLIMATIC CONDITIONS AND HIGHWAY TYPE. SPECIFICATIONS CONCERNING IMPURITIES IN AGGREGATES ARE DEFINED AND DIFFERENCIATED TO THE FIELD OF APPLICATION OF THE MATERIALS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IMPURITIES. MORE IMPURITIES ARE ACCEPTABLE IN LIMESTONE AND SEDIMENTARY ROCKS THAN IN VOLCANIC AND METAMORPHIC ROCKS. THE SHAPE OF THE PARTICLES AND THEIR SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS ARE DEFINED AS A FUNCTION OF THE CHIPPINGS CONTENT. /LCPC/RRL/
