INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF FREE AND BOUND WATER ON THE PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OF BITUMINOUS MINERAL-FILLER MIXTURES BY MEANS OF SEDIMENTATION IN ORGANIC LIQUIDS (IN GERMAN)

THE WATER CONTENT OF VERY FINE MINERAL MATERIALS SUCH AS GROUND SHALE, POWDERED QUARTZ, KAOLIN AND POWDERED LIMESTONE REPRESENTS A SPECIAL PROBLEM IN THE PRODUCTION OF BITUMINOUS MINERAL MIXTURES, BECAUSE THE WATER MAY BE EITHER BOUND CHEMICALLY SO THAT CHEMICAL FORCES ARE INVOLVED, OR BE PRESENT IN THE FREE STATE, SO THAT FLOTATION FORCES ARE INVOLVED. THE COMBINED WATER IS USUALLY DRIVEN OUT DURING THE HEATING AND PREPARATION OF THE BUILDING MATERIALS SO THAT A CERTAIN POROUS SPACE IS FORMED, WHICH MAY HAVE A FAVORABLE, OR PERHAPS AN UNFAVORABLE EFFECT ON THE ABSORPTION OF BITUMEN AND THE FORMATION OF BOUNDARY SURFACES AND FILMS. IN HIS WORK, THE AUTHOR HAS BEEN CONCERNED WITH ESTABLISHING THE SEDIMENT VOLUMES FORMED WHEN THE MINERAL FILLER IS WATERED, AND ALSO THE SEDIMENT VOLUMES OF BITUMINOUS MINERAL FILLER MIXTURES WHEN ORGANIC SOLVENTS ARE USED. THE TEST PROCEDURE IS OUTLINED, AND THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE SEDIMENT VOLUMES AND THE WATER CONTENT ARE SHOWN BY MEANS OF TABLES. /FG/RRL/
