A REPORT ON LIGHT-COLOURED BITUMINOUS SURFACES

THE LIGHT-REFLECTING QUALITIES OF ASPHALT SURFACES ARE STUDIED. SINCE THE ROAD SURFACE CONSTITUTES THE VISUAL BACKGROUND FOR THE ORIENTATION OF THE ROAD USER, AND THE RECOGNITION OF OBSTACLES AND OTHER ROAD USERS, MEASUREMENT OF REFLECTING QUALITY SHOULD BE AIMED AT SELECTING THAT WHICH MOST EFFICIENTLY AIDS THE EYE. BECAUSE OF THE VARIATION IN THE EYE CAPACITY OF INDIVIDUALS, SUCH AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE BASED ON AS WIDE A RANGE AS POSSIBLE OF STATISTICALLY PREPARED CRITERIA. TWO IMPORTANT FACTORS IN THIS CONNECTION ARE: (1) THE CAPACITY TO DISTINGUISH CONTRAST, (2) THE ADAPTABILITY OF THE EYE TO DIFFERENT DEGREES OF LUMINOSITY. DIFFERENCES IN THE TOTAL REFLECTION OF DRY AND WET ROAD SURFACES OF VARIOUS TYPES ARE ANALYSED. BRIEF REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE USE OF SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES IN WESTERN EUROPE, RUSSIA AND JAPAN, AND TO THE ANTI-SKID PROPERTIES OF THE SURFACES DISCUSSED. /RRL/
