SONIC TESTING OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE THE USEFULNESS OF THE SONIC METHOD OF TEST AS A MEANS OF DEVELOPING DATA SIGNIFICANT TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES AND TO EVALUATE THE METHOD AS A TOOL USEFUL FOR MEASURING PROGRESSIVE CHANGES IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES PRODUCED BY WEATHERING OR AGING. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND ACCELERATED WEATHERING ON THE SONIC MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO ARE PRESENTED. THE MODULI DETERMINED BY SONIC AND MECHANIZED TESTS ARE COMPARED. TWO SURFACE COURSE GRADATIONS ARE TESTED: ONE WITH 60-70, 85-100, 120-150 PENETRATION ASPHALTS AND THE OTHER WITH 60-70 PENETRATION. BEAMS AND CYLINDRICAL SPECIMENS WERE TESTED TO DETERMINE EFFECT OF SPECIMEN SIZE AND SHAPE ON RESONANT VIBRATION IN FUNDAMENTAL MODE. TESTING APPARATUS AND PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY CALCULATED FROM FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCY IS NOT STRICTLY VALID, PARTICULARLY AT TEMPERATURE ABOVE 40 F. THE TEST DATA INDICATE THAT THE SONIC METHOD OF MEASURING MODULUS OF ELASTICITY HAS APPLICATION IN THE FIELD OF BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE MIXTURES AS A MEANS OF FOLLOWING PROGRESSIVE CHANGE CAUSED BY LABORATORY EXPOSURE TO ACCELERATED WEATHERING.
