RESEARCH STUDIES AND PROCEDURES
PROMISING LINES FOR RESEARCH STUDIES ON THE HARDENING OF PAYING ASPHALTS ARE DISCUSSED. PROMISING RECOMMENDATIONS ARE: (1) FURTHER ELUCIDATION OF CHEMICAL MECHANISMS SINCE RECENT ADVANCES IN HIGH MASS SPECTROMETRY, INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY AND CHROMATOGRAPHY COULD BE UTILIZED TO DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC NATURE OF OXIDATION REACTIONS WHICH LEAD TO HARDENING, (2) EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENT ON HARDENING RATE USING MICROFILM TECHNIQUES TO ACCELERATE THE ACCUMULATION OF QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION, AND (3) IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR MEASURING 'STIFFNESS' AT LOW TEMPERATURES AND SHORT LOADING TIMES BY DEVELOPMENT OF MEASURING TECHNIQUES OF THE STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIP OF MICRO-SAMPLES OF ASPHALTS IN THE PURELY ELASTIC AND VISCO-ELASTIC REGIONS.
