RELATIONSHIP OF AGGREGATE VOIDAGE TO GRADATION

AN ARITHMETICAL METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR COMPUTING THE PERCENTAGE OF VOIDS IN THE MINERAL AGGREGATE (VMA) IN A COMPACTED BITUMINOUS MIXTURE FROM THE GRADATION OF THE AGGREGATE. THE USE OF THIS METHOD IS THE DESIGN OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VOIDAGE AND AGGREGATE GRADATION IS DISCUSSED. THE ARITHMETICAL METHOD OF CALCULATING VMA SEEMS SIMPLE AND RAPID. AN ESTIMATE OF VOIDAGE CAN QUICKLY BE MADE FROM A SIEVE ANALYSIS BY USING A SLIDE RULE OR A DECK CALCULATOR, THUS EXPENSIVE LABORATORY TIME AND EQUIPMENT IS NOT REQUIRED. THE METHOD HAS BEEN USED TO CHECK THE BINDER CONTENT AS DETERMINED BY CALCULATIONS AGAINST THAT DETERMINED BY A STANDARD METHOD OF DESIGN. THE METHOD IS USEFUL IN PREDICTING THE EFFECT OF CHANGES IN GRADATION ON AGGREGATE VOIDAGE. THE METHOD COMBINED WITH THE USE OF AN EQUATION, ENABLES THE DESIGNER TO ESTIMATE THE PROPER ASPHALT CONTENT FOR A PAVING MIXTURE. THE METHOD IS SUGGESTED FOR USE IN PRELIMINARY DESIGNS OR IN INSTANCES WHERE THE COST OF A COMPLETE DESIGN BASED ON STABILITY DETERMINATIONS IS NOT WANTED. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE STANDARD METHODS OF BITUMINOUS DESIGN.
