GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE SIMULATION OF FIELD COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE

A STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO SIMULATE THE FIELD COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE USING THE GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE. FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES USED IN THE STUDY ARE DESCRIBED. A PROCEDURE IS PRESENTED FOR THE SIMULATION OF FIELD COMPACTION AND THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE SIMULATION PROCEDURE ARE ANALYZED. RESULTS OBTAINED DEMONSTRATE THAT GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE SIMULATION OF FIELD COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE IS BOTH FEASIBLE AND PRACTICAL. THE USE OF THE AIR-ROLLER EQUIPPED GYRATORY COMPACTOR SET AT A 3-DEGREE ANGLE OF GYRATION, 50 PSI AIR- ROLLER PRESSURE, AND 100 PSI RAM PRESSURE SUCCESSFULLY SIMULATED THE RATE OF DENSIFICATION OF VARIOUS MIXTURES COMPACTED IN THE FIELD BY A 12-TON STEEL WHEEL BREAKDOWN ROLLER. THE NUMBER OF REVOLUTIONS REQUIRED TO ATTAIN A GIVEN DENSITY IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE NUMBER OF BREAKDOWN ROLLER PASSES REQUIRED FOR FIELD COMPACTION FOR THE RANGE OF DENSITIES AND MATERIALS STUDIED. OF THE 14 MIXTURES INVESTIGATED, THE RATES OF DENSIFICATION FOR 4 WERE NOT ADEQUATELY TESTED BY THE GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE AND THREE OF THESE WERE KNOWN TO HAVE HAD EXCESSIVE ASPHALT CONTENTS. THE USE OF GYRATORY SHEAR VALUES AS A MEASURE OF RELATIVE STABILITY APPEARS TO BE PROMISING. A VALUE OF 30.0 FOR THE TEST CONDITIONS USED IN THE STUDY MAY BE USEFUL IN ESTABLISHING A MINIMUM STABILITY CRITERION FOR COMPACTION.
