COMPARISON BETWEEN AIR BLOWING AND ACCELERATED AGING

THE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT AGED IN THE ROLLING THIN FILM OVEN WERE OBSERVED TO BEAR A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE TO PROPERTIES THAT WOULD BE PREDICTED IF THAT SAME ASPHALT HAD BEEN AIR BLOWN TO THE SAME STATE OF OXIDATION. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH THAT OXIDATION IN A THIN FILM IS THE SAME PROCESS AS THAT WHICH OCCURS DURING AIR BLOWING AT THE EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE. THIS WOULD ENABLE THE USE OF AN AIR BLOWING STILL TO MEASURE ACCELERATED AGING. IT IS THEORIZED THAN AN AIR BLOWING STILL COULD BE DESIGNED FOR STUDYING THE OXIDATION CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS ASPHALTS THAT MIGHT ALLOW THE CALCULATION OF THE ACTIVATION ENERGY OF A PARTICULAR ASPHALT FROM ONE AIR BLOW. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE OXIDATION MECHANISM OF A THIN FILM OF ASPHALT AT EVELATED TEMPERATURES, SUCH AS OCCURS IN THE ROLLING THIN FILM OVEN TEST, IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS THAT WHICH OCCURS DURING AIR BLOWING. A TEST PROCEDURE USING A SMALL LABORATORY AIR BLOWING STILL SHOULD GIVE AS RELIABLE AN ESTIMATE OF THE OXIDATION OF AN ASPHALT AT USE TEMPERATURES AS DOES A THIN FILM OVEN TEST AS LONG AS BOTH TESTS ARE RUN AT THE SAME TEMPERATURE. KINETIC DATA DEVELOPED FROM THESE TESTS MAY INCLUDE THE ACTIVATION ENERGY WHICH WILL ALLOW EXTRAPOLATION OF THE KINETIC RATE CONSTANT TO TEMPERATURES CLOSER TO THAT WHICH THE ASPHALT EXPERIENCES DURING USE.
