THE PRECISION OF TESTS MADE ON ASPHALT RESIDUA FROM THIN FILM OVEN EXPOSURES - A COOPERATIVE STUDY

A COMPARISON IS REPORTED ON THE REPRODUCIBILITY AND REPEATABILITY OF TESTS MADE ON RESIDUAL ASPHALTS WITH SIMILAR TESTS MADE ON ASPHALT RESIDUA FROM THIN FILM OVEN TESTS (TFOT) AND ROLLING-THIN FILM (RTF) OVEN EXPOSURES. APPROXIMATELY 50 GALLONS OF EACH OF 7 ASPHALTS WERE HEATED TO 350 F, MIXED THOROUGHLY AND PORED INTO 1-QUART DOUBLE LID PAINT CANS. HEAT TREATMENTS, THE TEST CONDITIONS, AND THE TIME ELAPSED BETWEEN EACH STEP IN THIS STUDY ARE CAREFULLY DEFINED. DETAILED PROCEDURES AND IDENTIFICATIONS OF THE ASTM TEST METHODS USED ARE PRESENTED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT IT APPEARS PRACTICAL AND ADVANTAGEOUS TO REPLACE THE TFOT WITH THE RTF EXPOSURE IN PAVING ASPHALT SPECIFICATIONS. NOT ONLY IS THE PRECISION AT LEAST AS GOOD BUT ALSO THE TEST CAN BE PERFORMED QUICKER, FIVE HOURS VS. 75 MINUTES. IN ADDITION, THIS SHORTER TESTING TIME, TOGETHER WITH THE GREATER RTF OVEN CAPACITY, INCREASES THE POTENTIAL TESTING CAPACITY OF ONE OVEN NEARLY 4 TIMES.
