STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENT UNDER STATIC LOADS

DEFLECTIONS AND STRAINS MEASURED AT CRITICAL LOAD POSITIONS ON A FULL SCALE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENT WERE COMPARED WITH SIMILAR DATA FROM A PLAIN CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT. RESULTS SHOW THAT WITHIN THE ELASTIC RANGE OF LOADING, THE BEHAVIOR OF BOTH TYPES OF PAVEMENT IS SIMILAR. LOADS IN EXCESS OF THE ELASTIC LIMIT PROCEDURE TENSION CRACKS IN BOTH TYPES OF PAVEMENT. ONLY IN THE PRESTRESSED PAVEMENT DO THE CRACKS CLOSE WHEN THE LOAD IS REMOVED, PROVIDED THAT THE LOAD DOES NOT EXCEED THE LIMIT CONDITION FOR THE SLAB. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT PRESTRESSED PAVEMENTS SHOULD NOT BE DESIGNED STRICTLY WITHIN ELASTIC LIMITS. /RRL/
