EFFECTS OF VARIOUS MINERAL FILLERS ON SKID-RESISTANCE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURES-TURKEY

ATTENTION HAS BEEN CALLED TO THE SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS OF PAVEMENT BECAUSE 20 TO 35 PERCENT OF TOTAL ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY SKIDDING. THE SURFACE TEXTURE OF A PAVEMENT DEPENDS ON BOTH THE GRADATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF AGGREGATE TO BE USED, AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE BITUMEN, PARTICULARLY TO WHICH EXTENT THE BITUMEN BINDER CHANGES UNDER THE ACTION OF WEATHER AND TRAFFIC. THESE ACTIONS REACT ON THE CHEMICAL NATURE AND RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BINDERS. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SPECIMENS PREPARED FROM BITUMINOUS MIXTURES WITH A CERTAIN GRADE OF BITUMEN (NAMELY 70-80 PEN. STRAIGHT RUN BITUMEN) AND VARIOUS TYPES OF FILLERS (LIMESTONE, ANDESITE, GRANITE, BASALT, MARBLE, AND TUFF). ALTHOUGH THE NATURE OF THE BITUMEN HAS THE GREATEST ROLE IN THE CHANGES THAT WOULD OCCUR IN ITS PROPERTIES, IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE FILLER MATERIAL HAS ALSO A CATALYTIC INFLUENCE ON THE ACTION OF THE WEATHERING AGENTS. ACCELERATED POLISHING TESTS AND SOLVENT FRACTIONATION TECHNIQUES WERE USED TO STUDY THE MATERIALS. LABORATORY TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON VARIOUS TYPES OF MINERAL FILLERS IN A WEATHERING CHAMBER EQUIPPED WITH A ZENON TUBE AND AN ULTRA RED LAMP. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT VARIOUS TYPE OF MINERAL FILLERS ACCELERATE THE CHANGES THAT OCCUR IN THE CHEMICAL NATURE OF THE BINDER. BASALT HAS THE GREATEST EFFECT ON THIS ACCELERATION, THE ORDER FOR THE OTHER FILLERS BEING GRANITE, LIMESTONE, ANDESITE, TUFF AND MARBLE, RESPECTIVELY. A RELATIONSHIP IS SHOWN BETWEEN THE CHEMICAL CHANGES OCCURRING IN THE SPECIMENS MENTIONED AND SKID-RESISTANCE PROPERTIES OF ARC SHAPED SPECIMENS WHICH WERE SUBJECTED TO AN ACCELERATED POLISHING MACHINE.
