BINDING EFFECTS OF MINERAL FILLER

MINERAL FILLER HAS BEEN DEFINED AS MINERAL PARTICLES WHICH ARE SUSPENDED IN ASPHALT. BASED ON THIS DEFINITION OF FILLER, BINDER IN AN ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURE HAS BEEN DEFINED AS THE FILLER-ASPHALT PHASE OF THE MIXTURE. THESE DEFINITIONS ARE JUSTIFIED BECAUSE FILLER IS SUSPENDED IN FILLER-ASPHALT SYSTEMS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA, COLLECTED OVER THE PAST THIRTY YEARS, SHOW CONCLUSIVELY THAT THE BEHAVIOR OF SUCH SYSTEMS IS THE BEHAVIOR OF SUSPENSIONS. A FILLER- ASPHALT PHASE IS PRESENT IN PAVING MIXTURES AND CONFINEMENT IN A MIXTURE MAY ALTER THE BEHAVIOR OF THE PHASE, BUT IT CANNOT DESTROY THAT PHASE. VISCOSITY OF FILLER-APSHALT SYSTEMS AND MARSHALL STABILITY OF PAVING MIXTURES ARE FUNCTIONS OF THE SAME FILLER CHARACTERISTICS AND THE CONCENTRATION OF FILLER. THE ARRANGEMENT OF AGGREGATE PARTICLES IN THE PAVING MIXTURE IS A FUNCTION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF FILLER IN THE BINDER, AND THEREFORE, THE VISCOSITY OF THE BINDER. SHEARING RESISTANCE DUE TO COHESION IN PAVING MIXTURES IS A FUNCTION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF FILLER IN THE BINDER. SHEARING RESISTANCE DUE TO COHESION OF PAVING MIXTURES IS INDEPENDENT OF THE VOLUME OF BINDER EXCEPT AT HIGH FILLER CONCENTRATION, WHERE POORLY DEFINED DEGREES OF FRIABILITY MAY BE PRESENT. SHEARING RESISTANCE DUE TO COHESION IS A FUNCTION OF THE MIXTURES VOID CONTENT WHICH IS DEPENDENT ON BINDER VOLUME. INTERNAL STABILITY OF PAVING MIXTURES IS A FUNCTION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF FILLER IN THE BINDER AND PRACTICALLY INDEPENDENT OF THE VOLUME OF BINDER. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT ALL MATERIALS WHICH ARE NORMALLY CALLED FILLER, SUCH AS MATERIALS DESCRIBED BY SPECIFICATION LIKE ASTM D 242-64 AND FRACTIONS OF COARSER MATERIALS WHICH PASS THE NUMBER 200 SIEVE, ARE FILLER ACCORDING TO THE GIVEN DEFINITION.
