ASPHALT CONSISTENCY CONTROL AND CHARACTERIZATION BY FLOW TEMPERATURE

ASPHALT CONSISTENCY CONTROL RESTS WITH THE TEMPERATURE NECESSARY TO REACH PARTICULAR CONDITIONS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF THE ROAD BUILDING PROCESS. AMONG THESE CONDITIONS ARE THE TEMPERATURES AT WHICH THE ASPHALT REACH: (1) A PUMPING VISCOSITY, (2) A SPRAYING VISCOSITY, (3) MIXING CONSISTENCIES, (4) SPREADING CONSISTENCIES, AND (5) ROLLING CONSISTENCIES, ETC. IN EACH INSTANCE THE CONTROL IS IN TERMS OF TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENTS. THIS IS IRRESPECTIVE OF WHETHER THE TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT IS OBTAINED BY CALCULATION OR INTERPOLATION OF CONSISTENCIES MEASURED AT SEVERAL FIXED TEMPERATURES, OR OBTAINED MORE DIRECTLY VIA THE FLOW TEMPERATURE TEST. FULL TEMPERATURE DEVELOPMENT AND SPECIMEN SELECTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE FLOW TEMPERATURE PROVED TO BE A RAPID AND CONVENIENT MEANS OF DIRECTLY MEASURING ASPHALT CONDITIONS RANGING FROM THE TEMPERATURE NECESSARY TO PUMP TO ROOM TEMPERATURE ISO-CONSISTENCIES. THE TEST CORRELATES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF ISO-CONSISTENCY TEMPERATURES AS CALCULATED FROM CONVENTIONAL VISCOSITY OR CONSISTENCY DATA OBTAINED AT TWO OR MORE FIXED TEMPERATURES. PRECISION IS SUFFICENT TO SIGNIFICANT ASPHALT CONSISTENCY CHANGES OR VARIATIONS DURING CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE. THE SPEED AND SIMPLICITY OF THE TEST LENDS ITSELF TO CONTROL TESTING. THIS CONVENIENCE PLUS FLOW LIMIT VALUES INCIDENTALLY OBTAINED MIGHT ALSO HELP MEASURE THE CONDITION OF ASPHALT IN THE MYRIAD OF PAVEMENT SITUATIONS INVOLVED IN STUDYING PERFORMANCE.
