EXPERIMENTS ON THE COMPACTING OF GRANULAR BITUMINOUS MIXES OF DISCONTINUOUS GRANULARITY

THE EXPERIMENTS IN QUESTION CONSISTED OF APPLYING GRANULAR BITUMINOUS MIXES TO A 4-KILOMETER SECTION OF NEW PAVEMENT ON ROUTE NATIONALE 7. ASPHALTIC CONCRETES OF DISCONTINUOUS GRANULARITY WERE USED. THEY DIFFERED ONE FROM ANOTHER IN RESPECT OF THE MINERALOGICAL NATURE OF THEIR COMPONENT AGGREGATES. THE MAIN AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO ATTEMPT TO LAY THESE GRANULAR MIXES SATISFACTORILY AND TO DETERMINE A METHOD OF OPTIMUM COMPACTING IN THE LIGHT OF THE PRODUCTION PLANT AVAILABLE AND THE CLIMATIC CONDITIONS ON THE SITE (INFLUENCE OF WIND). THE SECONDARY AIM WAS TO FOLLOW THE EVOLUTION OF THIS TYPE OF MIX UNDER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ON THE R. N. 7 IN THE COMING YEARS. THESE MIXES MAY HAVE A BETTER RESISTANCE TO GROOVING AND A BETTER TUGOSITY. TRANVERSE SECTIONS WILL BE TESTED FOR GROOVING, MEASUREMENTS OF SLIPPERINESS WILL BE MADE, AND GEOMETRIC MICROSECTIONS TAKEN TO TEST FOR SMOOTHNESS. /AUTHOR/
