MAKING OF SAMPLES FOR BITUMINOUS MIXES TESTS

THE SAMPLES INTENDED FOR TRIAXIAL TESTING OF MIXES ARE RIGHT CYLINDERS 10 CM IN DIAMETER AND 2 CM RAKE. THE USE OF HABITUAL LABORATORY COMPACTING METHOD LEADS TO IMPORTANT RANDOM VARIATIONS IN THE COMPACTNESS OF THE MIX, DEPENDING ON THE HEIGHT OF THE SAMPLE. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES WORK CARRIED OUT WITH THE AIM OF IMPROVING THE HOMOGENEITY AND REPRODUCIBILITY OF SAMPLES BY STUDYING THE FOLLOWING FACTORS: A STRICTLY DETERMINED METHOD OF PRODUCING SAMPLES, INVOLVING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE DELAYED-ACTION MECHANICAL PROCESSES: A METHOD OF CYCLIC VIBRO-COMPRESSION INVOLVING THE SETTING IN VIBRATION OF THE MEDIAN PART OF THE MOLD DURING COMPACTION: THE MAINTENANCE OF THE TEMPERATURE OF THE MIX THROUGHOUT THE COMPACTING. THE VIBRO-COMPRESSION METHOD EMPLOYED ALLOWS OF REDUCED UNIT PRESSURES. IN ADDITION, ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS SHOWS THAT THE PROCESS ADOPTED MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A MAXIMUM STANDARD DEVIATION OF COMPACTNESSES OF AROUND 0.1. FOR A 0/12 MIX, THE VARIATIONS IN COMPACTNESS IN FUNCTION OF THE HEIGHT OF THE SAMPLES ARE ABOUT 1%. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A METHOD OF COMPRESSION MOLDING OF 5X5X25 PRISMATIC SAMPLES OF PREDETERMINED COMPACTNESS. THE PROCEDURE USES CONVENTIONAL MATERIAL. IMMEDIATE STRIPPING OF THE CASTINGS GIVES A WORTHWHILE PRODUCTION YIELD WITH A SMALLER NUMBER OF MOLDS. THE SAMPLE MADE ARE REPRODUCIBLE. MOREOVER, THIS STUDY HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE INFLUENCE OF HOT PRESERVATION OF THE MIX ON ITS VISCO- ELASTIC PROPERTIES. /AUTHOR/
