SURVEY OF THE SKID RESISTANCE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT SURFACINGS

TESTS HAVE BEEN MADE OF THE SKID-RESISTANCE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT SURFACINGS BY THE APPLICATION OF A LIGHT TRAILER APPARATUS CONSTRUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MODEL DEVELOPED BY ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY. THE INVESTIGATIONS RELATED TO 102 ROAD SECTIONS, ABOUT 1000 KM IN TOTAL LENGTH. ROAD SECTIONS AT LEAST ONE YEAR OLD WERE MEASURED IN REGARD TO THEIR SKID-RESISTANCE PROPERTIES, THE EFFECT OF TIRE TREAD PATTERN AND STUDS UPON THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION, AND THE EFFECT AND SIGNIFICANCE OF WEAR INDUCED BY SANDING MATERIAL AND TRAFFIC UPON THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION. MEASUREMENTS WERE EFFECTED AT SPEEDS OF 50, 70 AND 90 K.P.H. THE RESULTS OBTAINED INDICATE THAT WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS THE SKID-RESISTANCE VALUES ARE FAIRLY GOOD. THUS THE MEAN SKID-RESISTANCE VALUES IN RESPECT OF ASPHALT CONCRETE AND GRAVEL ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACINGS ABOUT ONE YEAR OLD ARE: MEASUREMENT SPEED- 50 K.P.H., SKID-RESISTANCE 0.58; MEASUREMENT SPEED-70 K.P.H., SKID-RESISTANCE 0.46 WHEEL COMPLETELY LOCKED; MEASUREMENT SPEED - 90 K.P.H., SKID-RESISTANCE 0.39. THESE VALUES WERE SOMEWHAT HIGHER ON OLDER SURFACINGS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TIRE-TREND PATTERN, THE STUDDING, AND ALSO THE GRAIN SIZE OF SANDING MATERIAL CONSIDERABLY AFFECTED THE VALUE OF THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION; SIMILARLY, IT IS CHANGED ESSENTIALLY BY WEAR RESULTING FROM TRAFFIC. /RRL/
