VISCOSITY EFFECTS ON STRESS-STRAIN AND VOLUME CHANGE CHARACTERISTIC OF ASPHALTIC MIXTURES

A STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF VISCOSITY OF ASPHALT ON STRESS-STRAIN AND VOLUME CHANGE CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. FIVE GRADES OF ASPHALT FROM THE SAME SOURCE WERE SELECTED FOR THIS STUDY. VISCOSITY OF EACH ASPHALT IN ABSOLUTE UNITS WAS EVALUATED USING THE SLIDING PLATE MICROFILM VISCOMETER. IN ALL THE TESTS THE AGGREGATE TYPE, AGGREGATE GRADATION, AND ASPHALT CONTENT WERE KEPT THE SAME, AND THE ONLY VARIABLE WAS ASPHALT VISCOSITY. THE STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES WERE EVALUATED IN A TRIAXIAL TEST. THE VOLUME CHANGE OF THE SPECIMEN DURING THE TRIAXIAL TEST WAS MEASURED BY A SPECIAL DEVICE, WHICH WAS ADOPTED FROM A SIMILAR DEVICE DEVELOPED BY BISHOP AND DONALD FOR SOIL TESTING. CORRELATIONS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED BETWEEN VISCOSITY OF ASPHALT AND STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MIX. /AUTHOR/
