SURFACE PROFILE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS /IN GERMAN/

AFTER RECALLING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EVENESS AND SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF A ROAD SURFACE WITH REGARD TO TRAFFIC SAFETY, METHODS OF MEASURING THESE PROPERTIES ARE PRESENTED. A NEW TECHNIQUE OF MEASURING EVENENESS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH USES AS CRITERIA (1) THE RADIUS OF UNEVENNESS CURVATURE (CURVATURE IS DEFINED AS THE VARIATION IN THE ANGLE FORMED BY TWO LINES RESTING ON THE EVENNESS CURVE) AND (2) THE STANDARD DEVIATION OF ANGULAR VALUES FOR WHICH A LIMIT VALUE IS DEFINED. A SPECIAL APPARATUS HAS BEEN DESIGNED FOR MEASURING THE ABOVE CRITERIA AND THE METHOD HAS BEEN INCORPORATED IN STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS. LIMIT VALUES ARE GRADED ACCORDING TO ROAD CLASSIFICATION BY SPEED. TO MEASURE SKIDDING RESISTANCE, A NEW APPARATUS IS USED WHICH IS APPLIED DIRECTLY ON THE ACTUAL ROAD SURFACE. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT SLIPPERINESS INCREASES WITH WEAR OF THE COARSE SURFACING AND DESCREASES ONLY WHEN THE AGGREGATES ARE EXPOSED. THE ADDITION OF SILICON CARBIDED TO INCREASE SKIDDING RESISTANCE WAS STUDIED BY MEANS OF A POLISHING MACHINE AND REPEATED MEASUREMENTS UNDER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. /LCPC/RRL/
