VISCOELASTIC RESPONSE OF ASPHALT PAVING SLABS UNDER CREEP LOADING

THE INVESTIGATION DESCRIBED WAS CARRIED OUT ON A SINGLE MIX CONSISTING OF 85-100 PENETRATION BITUMEN AND A CRUSHED GRANITE AGGREGATE. VISCOELASTIC BENDING MODULUS WAS DETERMINED ON BEAMS /1 IN BY 1 IN BY 12 IN./. THE SLABS WERE APPROXIMATELY 40 IN BY 40 IN BY 1 IN. UNIFORM IN THICKNESS AND TEXTURE. THESE SLABS RESTED ON A SIMULATED SUBGRADE OF 1600 COIL SPRINGS HAVING A FOUNDATION MODULUS OF 200LB/SQ.IN. DETAILS OF THE BENDING TESTS AND LOADING TESTS ARE GIVEN AND RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHS. THE THE TIME-DEPENDENT MODULI DERIVED FROM THE BENDING TESTS WERE USED TO PREDICT THE DEFLEXIONS WHICH MIGHT BE EXPECTED FROM THE SLAB TESTS BY APPLYING A NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE TO CLASSIC ELASTIC THIN-PLATE THEORY. AGREEMENT BETWEEN PREDICTED AND EXPERIMENTAL DEFLEXIONS WAS NOT GOOD, BUT IT WAS CONSIDERED THAT THEY DID INDICATE THAT THE VISCOELASTIC APPROACH PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL TOOL FOR ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF ASPHALT SURFACINGS.
