EVALUATION OF WELDED-WIRE FABRIC IN BITUMINOUS CONCRETE RESURFACING

WELDED WIRE FABRIC AS A MEANS FOR CONTROLLING REFLECTION CRACKING IN BITUMINOUS OVERLAYS OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BY A NUMBER OF HIGHWAY AGENCIES. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES ONE SUCH INVESTIGATION BEING CONDUCTED BY THE ILLINOIS DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS. IN THE ILLINOIS WORK, AN OLD, NARROW, PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT WAS WIDENED WITH PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE WIDENING STRIPS AND THE WHOLE WAS RESURFACED WITH BITUMINOUS CONCRETE IN WHICH WELDED WIRE FABRIC WAS INCORPORATED AT SELECTED LOCATIONS. FABRIC IN VARYING WIDTH WAS PLACED OVER PART OF THE LONGITUDINAL JOINT FORMED BY THE WIDENING, AND ALSO OVER CERTAIN OF THE TRANSVERSE JOINTS AND CRACKS. JOINTS AND CRACKS WHERE THE FABRIC WAS NOT USED HAVE SERVED AS A CONTROL FOR EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE FABRIC. LITTLE DIFFICULTY WAS EXPERIENCED WITH PLACEMENT OF THE FABRIC DURING CONSTRUCTION. AFTER FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE UNDER TRAFFIC, REFLECTION CRACKING IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER WHERE THE FABRIC WAS USED, FOR ALL WIDTHS OF FABRIC INCLUDED IN THE STUDY. /AUTHOR/
