THE FUNCTION OF ASPHALT LAYERS IN PAVEMENTS WITH REGARD TO PERFORMANCE

THE INFLUENCE OF LOADING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IS EXAMINED, WITH CONSIDERATION GIVEN TO RUTTING, FRACTURE, FATIGUE, AND INFLUENCE OF AIR AND WATER. ALSO DISCUSSED IS MIXTURE STIFFNESS, WHICH INFLUENCES STRESSES AND STRAINS OCCURRING IN ALL LAYERS OF A PAVED ROAD. THEORY HAS BEEN USED TO DEFINE THE STRESSES AND STRAINS DEVELOPED AND PERMIT GUIDES FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TO BE INDICATED. THE INFLUENCE OF THE ASPHALT ON MIXTURE PROPERTIES IS ALSO BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. RESISTANCE TO RUTTING IS DISCUSSED, FOR A VARIETY OF LOADING CONDITIONS, IN TERMS OF ESTABLISHED MIX DESIGN PROCEDURES AND TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS AT LOADING TIMES AND TEMPERATURES CONSISTENT WITH EXPECTED CONDITIONS. BEARING CAPACITY RELATIONSHIPS BASED ON VALUES FOR COHESION AND ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION OBTAINED FROM TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS ARE ALSO SUGGESTED. CRITICAL CONDITIONS FOR FRACTURE RESULTING FROM LOADING AND TEMPERATURE CHANGE ARE ANALYZED. FATIGUE CRITERIA ARE PRESENTED, AND IT IS INDICATED THAT MIXTURE DESIGN TO MINIMIZE FATIGUE IS DEPENDENT ON THE THICKNESS OF THE ASPHALT LAYER. TO MINIMIZE THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF AIR AND WATER, PERMEABILITY CRITERIA ARE SUGGESTED AND PROPER COMPACTION IS EMPHASIZED.
