PT. PLEASANT BRIDGE COLLAPSE - CONCLUSIONS OF THE FEDERAL STUDY
A DETAILED EXAMINATION WAS MADE OF THE WRECKAGE OF THE PT. PLEASANT BRIDGE, INCLUDING METALLURGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE EYEBAR WHICH FIRST FAILED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT A PARTICULAR FORM OF CORROSION, TO WHICH EXTREMELY HIGH-STRENGTH STEELS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE WHEN EXPOSED TO AIR POLLUTANTS, MAY HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN THE CRACKING THAT LED TO THE FAILURE. A FATIGUE EFFECT MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.
