AN OUTLINE AND PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE BASIC PROBLEMS OF ROAD LOADING MECHANICS

RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED OF THE INITIAL PHASE OF A PROPOSED RESEARCH PROGRAM IN THE FIELD OF ROAD MECHANICS. THE COMPLETE ROAD LOADING SYSTEM IS DEFINED AND ITS VARIOUS COMPONENT ELEMENTS DISCUSSED. A REALISTIC MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE VEHICLE AS THE ROAD LOADING ELEMENT WAS DEVELOPED. A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE RELATIVELY INDEPENDENT OF THE TIME LAG BETWEEN FRONT AND REAR TIRE ROAD INPUTS (ESPECIALLY AT THE HIGHER FREQUENCIES). IT IS CONCLUDED THAT VISCOUS DAMPERS ON BOTH FRONT AND REAR AXLES ARE DESIRABLE IN MINIMIZING DYNAMIC ROAD LOADING FORCES AND THE COULOMB FRICTION DAMPING RATIO IS INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO FREQUENCY AND INPUT AMPLITUDE. THE UNLOADED VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 100% HIGHER DYNAMIC ROAD LOAD PER POUND OF STATIC LOAD FOR THE REAR AXLE (NO VISCOUS DAMPING) THAN THE LOADED VEHICLE. ROAD RESONANCES WHICH OCCUR AT THE SAME FREQUENCY AS VEHICLE ROAD LOAD INPUT PEAKS ARE VERY UNDESIRABLE. HORIZONTAL ROAD LOADS CAN OCCUR WHICH CAN BE NEARLY EQUAL IN MAGNITUDE TO THE VERTICAL ROAD LOADS.
