STUDIES--NOTABLY BY MEANS OF ECONOMETRIC APPROACHES--OF THE FACTORS WHICH DETERMINE THE DEMAND FOR GOODS TRANSPORT

ETUDES (NOTAMENT AU MOYEN D'APPROCHES ECONOMETRIQUES) DES FACTEURS QUI DETERMINENT LA DEMANDE DES TRANSPORTS DE MARCHANDISES

A methodological and critical study of the instruments for an econometric analysis of the demand for goods transport. The author reviews the statistical data available, as well as the factors which determine the demand for transport, the formulae which can be used in order to link the demand for transport quantitatively to these factors, the global, sectional and regional approaches, and the transport coefficients. He comments on the research which has been carried out, principally in Germany, in order to establish the influence of the structure, the growth, and the evolution, of the economy, on the demand for transport, the sectional inequalities, and the effect of the offer, and he concludes by making suggestions concerning the research to be carried out. The report is followed by a synthesis of the exchanges of view which took place.
