FINAL REPORT ON A STUDY OF AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT, INTERSTATE NO. 59, JONES COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI

THREE YEARS OF INITIAL LIFE OF A CONTINUOUSLY-REINFORCED CONCRETE, DIVIDED HIGHWAY WERE STUDIED. THE SOUTHBOUND TWO- LANE ROADWAY HAD ROD REINFORCING, AND THE NORTHBOUND PAVEMENT WAS SIMILAR EXCEPT REINFORCING OF SMOOTH WELDED WIRE FABRIC WAS USED. TWELVE ABNORMAL CRACKS DEVELOPED EARLY IN THE LIFE OF THE MESH-REINFORCED PAVEMENT, ALL LOCATED AT LAPS IN THE WELDED WIRE FABRIC SHEETS. PAVEMENT ROUGHNESS CHECKS INDICATED INCREASES OF ROUGHNESS IN ALL SECTIONS, AS WELL AS IN ADJACENT CONVENTIONAL PAVEMENT. THE ROD- REINFORCED CONVENTIONAL PAVEMENT INDICATED LESS ROUGHNESS WHEN NEW THAN ROD-REINFORCED PAVEMENT OF THE PROJECT. THE FINAL TEST OF CONVENTIONAL PAVEMENT SHOWED LESS ROUGHNESS THAN THE CONTINUOUSLY-REINFORCED PAVEMENT, USING EITHER RODS OR MESH. PAVEMENTS OF EACH ROADWAY WERE ANCHORED ON THE NORTH END BY FIVE MONOLITHIC REINFORCED-CONCRETE LUGS AND ON THE SOUTH BY FOUR OF THE SAME. IN SPITE OF THIS ANCHORAGE, MOVEMENTS FROM 0.5 TO 1.25 INCHES WERE OBSERVED NEAR THE PAVEMENT ENDS, WITH INDICATIONS OF PROGRESSIVE LENGTHENING. SPACING OF NORMAL CRACKS, WHILE VARIABLE WITH STEEL PERCENTAGE IN THE FIRST YEAR OF PAVEMENT LIFE, APPEARED TO NOT BE GREATLY AFFECTED BY THIS FACTOR AFTER TWO TO THREE YEARS. AFTER THIS PERIOD, THE CRACKS WERE MOST CLOSELY SPACED IN THE MOST HEAVILY REINFORCED PAVEMENT.
