THERMAL SHRINKAGE CRACKING OF SOME ONTARIO PAVEMENTS

TECHNIQUES USED PREVIOUSLY ONLY IN THE LABORATORY WERE EXTENDED AND MODIFIED TO DETERMINE THE LOW-TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS OF A NUMBER OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT SECTIONS WITH WIDELY VARYING DEGREES OF CRACKING. RELATIVELY SIMPLE, RELIABLE, LOW-COST APPARATUS FOR THIS PURPOSE WAS ALSO DEVELOPED AND IS CAPABLE OF BEING FOR DESIGN. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT HIGH CRACKING FREQUENCIES WERE ASSOCIATED WITH STIFF BITUMINOUS SURFACES AT LOW TEMPERATURES AND COULD BE CORRELATED WITH PREDICTED FRACTURE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE MIXTURE. IT ALSO APPEARED THAT THE MOST DOMINANT VARIABLE AFFECTING FRACTURE SUSCEPTIBILITY WAS ASPHALT SOURCE; FURTHER, THAT IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A CERTAIN CRACKING FREQUENCY, A HARD ASPHALT FROM ONE SOURCE COULD BE EQUIVALENT TO A SOFT ASPHALT FROM ANOTHER SOURCE, DEPENDING UPON THEIR LOW-TEMPERATURE STIFFNESS PROPERTIES. A TENTATIVE DESIGN SUBSYSTEM HAS BEEN DESCRIBED, USING SYSTEMS ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT AN INTEGRAL FUTURE PART OF THIS SUBSYSTEM SHOULD BE THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW-TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATION CRITERIA FOR BITUMINOUS MATERIALS. /CGRA/
