EFFECT OF STUDDED TIRES ON DURABILITY OF ROAD SURFACING

IN SWEDEN, WHERE 53% OF ALL VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH STUDDED TIRES, THE PAVEMENTS ARE BADLY DETERIORATING THROUGH WEAR. THE SWEDISH ROAD ADMINISTRATION ESTIMATES THAT THE COST OF WEAR IN 1968-69 AMOUNTED TO SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS. SKID TESTS MADE BY THE SWEDISH ROAD RESEARCH INSTITUTE SHOW THAT STUDDED TIRES ARE EFFECTIVE ON ICY SURFACE NEAR FREEZING TEMPERATURE BUT NOT SO ON SANDED ICY SURFACE, PACKED SNOW, OR VERY COLD ICE. STUDIES MADE IN THE LABORATORY AND OUTDOORS ON AND EXPERIMANTAL ROAD TRACK INDICATE THAT BITUMINOUS MIXTURES TOPPED WITH PRECOATED CHIPPINGS GAVE THE BEST RESISTANCE TO WEAR BY STUDDED TIRES. BITUMINOUS CONCRETE AND FINE STONE-FILLED SHEET MATS TOPPED WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF PRECOATED CHIPPING ARE BEING TESTED ON THE PAVEMENT BY THE ASPHALT ASSOCIATION IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITIES OF STOCKHOLM AND MALMO. LITERATURE SURVEYS AND SPECIAL STUDIES SHOW THAT STUDDED TIRES ARE GAINING POPULARITY IN THE NORTHERN PART OF U.S. AND CANADA. WEAR RATES OF PAVEMENT IN MONTREAL BY ORDINARY TIRES HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. FACTORS AFFECTING WEAR RATE AND DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED. /CGRA/
