THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE ROAD AT WINTHORPE, NOTTINGHAMPSHIRE

THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE ROAD AT WINTHORPE, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. THE METHOD OF PRESTRESSING WAS BY HYDRAULIC JACKS AND GROUND ANCHORAGES. THE PRESTRESSED SLABS HAVE BEEN BLOCKED SO THAT THE PRESTRESS VARIES WITH DAILY AND SEASONAL CHANGES OF TEMPERATURE, AND MEASUREMENTS HAVE SHOWN A PRESTRESS/ TEMPERATURE RELATIONSHIP OF 50-80LB/SQ.IN./C. LOSSES OF PRESTRESS DUE TO CREEP AND SHRINKAGE WERE ABOUT 1200, 1000 AND 600LB/SQ.IN. DURING THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD SUMMERS, THE ROAD HAS NEEDED TO BE RESTRESSED EACH YEAR UP TO DATE. INSTRUMENTS IN REFERENCE SLABS INTENDED TO MEASURE SHRINKAGE HAVE SHOWN THAT THE CONCRETE HAS EXPANDED BY AN AVERAGE OF 50 IN./IN. AN AVERAGE COEFFICIENT OF SUBGRADE RESTRAINT OF 1.0 HAS BEEN DETERMINED ON THE ROAD. THE EXPERIMENT INCLUDED 5-IN. AND 7-IN. THICK PRESTRESSED SLABS AND 5-IN., 6-IN., 7-IN. AND 8-IN. THICK REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS SO THAT A COMPARISON OF THE PERFORMANCE OF PRESTRESSED AND NORMAL CONSTRUCTION UNDER TRAFFIC WILL BE POSSIBLE. /AUTHOR/
