ROAD RIDEABILITY RATING EXPERIMENT

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ROAD USER'S OPINION OF ROAD RIDEABILITY AND THE ROUGHNESS OF PAVEMENTS AS MEASURED BY THE DEPARTMENT'S PROFILOMETER IS PRESENTED. THE ROAD USER'S OPINION OF ROAD RIDEABILITY WAS OBTAINED FROM PEOPLE'S DRIVING OR TRAVELLING IN THE MORE COMMON TYPES OF PASSENGER CARS OVER A NUMBER OF SELECTED TEST SECTIONS WHERE ROUGHNESS HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY DETERMINED WITH THE PROFILOMETER. THE RATERS AND PASSENGER CARS WERE CLASSIFIED INTO DISTINCTIVE GROUPS AND STATISTICAL METHODS WERE USED TO ANALYSE THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY. COMPLETE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY ARE PRESENTED AND SOME OF THE SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED. THE MOST IMPORTANT FINDING FROM THE ANALYSIS IS THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE ROAD USER'S OPINION AND THE MEASURED ROUGHNESS INDEX Q BY THE PROFILOMETER. THE CORRELATION COEFFICIENT IS 0.9807, AND THE EQUATION DEVELOPED IS: RATING = -6.9381 LOG Q + 16.5515. /CGRA/
