THE EFFECT OF STRENGTH ON PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMICS OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

EVIDENCE FROM FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS SHOWS CONCLUSIVELY THAT BETTER PERFORMANCE, IN TERMS OF TRAFFIC CARRIED, IS OBTAINED FROM SLABS MADE WITH CONCRETE OF HIGHER STRENGTH THAN THE NORMAL MIX SUPPLIED TO MEET CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS. FROM THE ALCONBURY HILL RESULTS IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE LIFE OF A CONCRETE ROAD SLAB IS APPROXIMATELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH TO THE POWER 3.2. USING THIS RESULT A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR ASSESSING THE ECONOMICS OF USING DIFFERENT STRENGTH CONCRETES WITH SUITABLY ADJUSTED SLAB THICKNESS. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THERE MAY BE ECONOMIES IN THE USE OF CONCRETES WITH STRENGTHS OTHER THAN NORMAL. /AUTHOR/
