INVESTIGATIONS ON THE CONTROL OF COMPACTION OF ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS BY ULTRASONIC METHOD

IN THIS PAPER AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ANALYZE THE EFFECT OF COMPACTION ON THE VELOCITY OF ULTRASONIC PULSE AND THE ATTENUATION COEFFICIENT DEFINED AS THE DECREASE IN THE ENERGY OR INTENSITY OF SOUND WAVE WHILE PROPAGATING THROUGH A MEDIUM. TESTS ARE CONDUCTED ON THREE TYPES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE: SAND ASPHALT, FINE GRAINED SURFACE COURSE MIXTURE, AND COARSE GRAINED BASE COURSE MIXTURE; WITH TWO REGIMES OF COMPACTION AND OVER A TEMPERATURE RANGE +20 DEGREES C TO +60 DEGREES C. THE SPECIMENS WERE PREPARED IN THE ALL-UNION HIGHWAY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (MOSCOW). A NEW METHOD OF DETERMINING THE ATTENUATION COEFFICIENT IS DESCRIBED AND ITS RELATIVE ADVANTAGES ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
