QUANTITAIVE MICRORADIOGRAPHY OF CONCRETE USING COLOR FILM

AN APPLICATION OF THE TECHNIQUE OF COLOR RADIOGRAPHY FOR STUDYING THE VARIATIONS IN MICROPOROSITY OF CONCRETE IS DESCRIBED. COLOR FILM WAS FOUND TO BE SUITABLE FOR QUANTITAIVE MICRORADIOGRAPHY BECAUSE OF ITS LOW GRANULARITY AND HIGH RESOLUTION, AS WELL AS A LINEAR FILM RESPONSE FOR X-RAYS IN THE THICKNESS RANGE STUDIED (1 TO 8 MM). A STUDY OF COLOR RADIOGRAPHS OF THE CONCRETE SHOWED THAT THE MICROPOROSITY OF THE PASTE WAS NOT UNIFORM. A DARK RIM WAS OBSERVED AROUND MEDIUM AND LARGE AIR BUBBLES, THE DENSITY IN THIS DENSE ZONE BEING 14 PLUS OR MINUS 2 PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE DENSITY OF THE PASTE AND 20 PLUS OR MINUS 2 PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE DENSITY IN THE AREA ADJACENT TO THE RIM. THE PRECISION OF THE METHOD FOR OBTAINING THE DENSITY WAS ESTIMATED TO BE BETTER THAN 0.02 G/CUCM. THE METHOD CAN ALSO BE USED FOR THE STUDY OF OTHER MINERAL MATERIALS. /AUTHOR/
