CHARACTERISTICS OF AGGREGATES AND SLIPPERINESS

THE AUTHORS DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GEOMETRIC ROUGHNESS OF ROAD SURFACINGS AND THE ROLE PLAYED BY THE ANGULARITY AND SURFACE TEXTURE OF THE AGGREGATES USED IN THE WEARING COURSE. CHANGES OCCUR WHEN AGGREGATES BECOME FRAGMENTED AND, AS A RESULT, DISAPPEAR RAPIDLY, AND WHEN WEAR BY FRICTION REDUCES THE ANGULARITY AND INCREASES THE DIMENSION OF SURFACES WHERE POLISHING TAKES PLACE. WEAR WAS STUDIED BY MEANS OF AN ACCELERATED POLISHING TEST. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE RESISTANCE TO POLISHING DEPENDS ON THE QUANTITATIVE MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF THE ROCK (HARDNESS AND QUANTITY OF MINERALS USED). A MEAN WEIGHT HARDNESS AND A ROCK HARDNESS CONTRAST WERE DEFINED WHICH CHARACTERIZE THE STATE OF AGGREGATE SURFACE AND POLISHING TO BE CALCULATED. /TRRL/
