CONSTRUCTION OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS USING WET AGGREGATE

A REPORT OF AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE FEASIBILITY OF CONSTRUCTING BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS USING WET AGGREGATES IS PRESENTED, IN WHICH CERTAIN CHEMICAL ADDITIVES HAVE BEEN USED TO IMPROVE THE ADHESION PROPERTIES OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURES UTILIZED FOR COATING AGGREGATES. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PREPARATION AND TESTING OF THE SAMPLES FOR COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH ACCORDING TO ASTM DESIGNATION D-1074- 58T AND ASTM D1075-54. AMONG THE CHEMICALS TRIED HIQUAT T AND ANISTRIP SEEM TO BE VERY PROMISING, FOLLOWED BY ARQUAD 2S, AND BENZAMIDE DUOMEEN T. THE TEST RESULTS INDICATE THAT BY USING TRACE AMOUNTS OF CHEMICALS (HALF PER CENT TO ONE AND A HALF PERCENT BY WT. OF BINDER), IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO CONSTRUCT SATISFACTORY BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS USING WET AGGREGATES AND NORMAL BITUMINOUS BINDER.
