POSSIBLE ELIMINATION OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES BY COATING WITH THIN SURFACINGS

TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT ON VARIOUS SECTIONS OF THE MOTORWAY NETWORK IN COLOGNE TO SEE WHETHER DAMAGED GUSSASPHALT SURFACINGS CAN BE REPAIRED BY THE ROLLING ON OF THIN SURFACINGS, AND WHETHER THESE SURFACINGS OFFER FUTURE PROTECTION AGAINST DAMAGE CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES. SURFACINGS MADE OF GUSSASPHALT 0/5, 0/8, 0/8 WITH GAP-GRADED AGGREGATE AND AN ADMIXTURE OF RUBBER, AND FINE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE 0/8 (DUESSELDORFER SURFACING) WERE USED.
