THE PRACTICAL USE OF CATION-ACTIVE BITUMEN EMULSIONS

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF PRACTICAL TESTS CARRIED OUT SINCE 1966 WITH CATION-ACTIVE BITUMEN EMULSIONS. IT WAS FOUND THAT SURFACINGS MADE WITH THIS TYPE OF EMULSION WERE STILL PERFECT AFTER SEVERAL YEARS, WHEREAS THOSE MADE WITH ANION-ACTIVE EMULSION HAD UNDERGONE MARKED DETERIORATION. IT WAS ALSO ESTABLISHED THAT ACID- RESISTANT CONTAINERS SHOULD BE USED FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CATION-ACTIVE EMULSIONS AND THAT LONG HEAT-TREATMENT SHOULD BE APPLIED IN ORDER TO ATTAIN PERFECT EMULSIFICATION. THE EMULSIFYING AGENT SHOULD ALSO BE STABILIZED IF THE EMULSIONS ARE TO BE DURABLE. /TRRL/
